Sam is from the Sting x Cammie breeding of 2014 — our first and only attempt to breed small standard poodles. Unfortunately, he turned out to be 15 pounds heavier than his mom and 10 pounds heavier than his dad! So while he is still on the small side of average for male, he is not the size we were hoping for! In every other way, he is perfect!
Sam has beautiful movement and gorgeous structure. Michelle Birchard is his handler and together they have received two points towards his AKC championship. They have also received a UKC championship, and Best in Breed, Best in Group and Reserve Best in Show at a UKC show. The UKC judge who selected him for Reserve Best in Show took a few minutes to tell us how much she liked Sam. She said that when she saw him move, both from the side and from the back/front, she knew that he had fabulous structure. She particularly complimented us on his chest — a weakness in many standard poodles. And she liked his coat so much that she asked a younger colleague to feel his coat and remember that this is what a poodle coat is supposed to feel like.
The thing I like best about Sam is his temperament. He has a steady calm temperament that is self-confident and always happy. He loves children, and when he sees a child in the park, he will often run over, drop his ball, and beg the child to throw it for him. Most kids just love playing with him. He loves his ball, but he doesn’t complain if someone takes it away from him, or if another dog steals it. What a great, even-tempered boy he is! He is similar to Sting (his dad) in some interesting ways. They both like to lie on their backs curled into a question mark shape. And when they are outside and wanting to come back in, they each just wait patiently until some human notices and opens the door. No rush … whenever you get around to opening the door is just fine!
Sam has a great pedigree. Both of his parents are from championship lines. He has a very low COI reflecting the fact that there is very little inbreeding in his pedigree. His two parents and four grandparents all have hips that have been rated as good or excellent.
Sam has been health tested and has a CHIC number indicating that the recommended health testing is complete. He is now being used as a stud dog in Michelle Birchard’s breeding program (New Destiny Poodles). For more information, see www.newdestinypoodles.com.
